Search engine optimization (SEO) is the key to success for any blogger. The right SEO improves your Google rank, brings in more readers, and makes you more money. Before setting off to create a blog, you must know the very basics of SEO. Here are some tips for new bloggers who want to make the most of each blog post.

Focus on a Niche, and Use the Google Keyword Tool

Google has a keyword tool that lets you view the amount of searches for any given phrase. Focus on phrases that have approximately 10,000 searches each month. Targeting very competitive phrases will frustrate you, because new blogs are unable to compete against well-established websites. Focus on low competition, so you can bring in readers without competing against the big boys.
Focus on your niche. Google has a hard time indexing you when your blog does not focus on one topic. Focus on a topic, and write posts that correspond to a specific industry. If you have more than one expertise, create a separate blog for your other niche topic.

Update Your Blog Regularly

Google likes to see fresh new content. Creating new blog posts regularly tells Google that you are active, and its search engine bot needs to return frequently to the blog. If you don’t update often, Google will slow down your crawl rate. This means that it will take longer for your pages to get crawled and indexed. Blogs that focus on time-sensitive material require a high crawl rate. Updating your blog often ensures Google will continue to return frequently.

Create a Backlink Campaign

Share your work, and invite others to read your blog. Buying links is frowned upon by Google, but you can gain backlinks through promotions, networking with other bloggers, and advertising. Backlinks increase your PageRank (PR), which is a proprietary number established by Google’s search engine. Google prefers to index popular content, so it provides better ranking for bloggers with more backlinks.

Avoid Slow Plug-ins and Coding Mistakes

Search engine rank is determined by a bot called “Googlebot.” The bot crawls your site and indexes your pages accordingly. Google recently announced that web page performance now plays a part in indexing.  A common blogger mistake is placing too many plug-ins on the page. Plug-ins that are poorly coded slow your website and decrease your Google rank. Slow websites also frustrate readers, so it can turn away potentially loyal readership. Keep the blog streamlined and avoid unknown plug-ins.

Don’t Steal Content or “Scrape” Others’ Sites

A scraper is a program that steals content and posts it to a blogger’s site. Make sure you have permission to use content, and avoid posting entire articles on your site. Google does not want to index duplicate content, so you only harm your blog by using others’ writing. Create quality, unique content that compels readers to come back for more. If you need help, purchase unique blog posts from a guest blogger. Guest blogging has become a popular way to get a new angle on a subject, and it creates fresh, new content for the search engines.
